Is it worth getting cosmetic dental treatment? That’s a good question! Nowadays, dental technology has improved to the point where you can have cosmetic treatment done to give you the perfect smile. But is it worth it?

There are so many cosmetic dentist treatments available to people nowadays, from getting veneers to cover cracks or discolouration to using Invisalign to correct teeth positioning. In this article, we’ll examine whether any of them are worth it.

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

When you hear the term “cosmetic dentistry”, it draws your attention to how your teeth look, doesn't it? Well, most cosmetic treatments do improve the look of your teeth, but that isn’t their only function. Cosmetic oral treatments also play a part in improving your overall oral health. How your mouth looks says a lot about its health. For instance, many people use braces to straighten out their teeth. This isn’t just to give them a better smile, though. Straight teeth are believed to offer better support for the mouth. This concept can be applied to other cosmetic treatments too.

Is it worth it?

In the end, your reasons for having any cosmetic treatments done need to be justified by the need for them. Say, for example, that you chip a tooth slightly. A veneer is a justified solution to fixing it. However, if you have great-looking teeth with no issues, then you might just be spending unnecessary money to put veneers over them. Even then, the benefits of having stain-resistant teeth could be worth it for you. It all comes down to your personal preferences.

Types of cosmetic treatments

Now, there are a number of different cosmetic treatments that you can do, some of them are basic and non-invasive, while others require a bit more of an invasive procedure. Here they are:

Teeth whitening

Having pearly white teeth has become the main feature of the perfect smile. Teeth whitening is among one of the most popular cosmetic procedures that people go for. There are two ways in which you can do this. First, you can have a professional do it for you at a dentist's. Second, you can do it yourself with a teeth whitening kit.

Many whitening toothpastes, kits, or supplements can improve the appearance of your teeth, making them appear whiter. However, there is a risk of doing this yourself. You might choose a product that damages your teeth, or you might damage them while performing the procedure.

Bonding

Accidents happen to us throughout our lives, some of which can damage our teeth. When it comes to chipped or cracked teeth, bonding is used to repair it. Bonding refers to using a tooth-coloured resin to fix imperfections in the teeth and to add additional strength and support to the existing tooth.

Once applied, the resin is quickly hardened using an ultraviolet light and then polished and shaped to finish it off. As a result, your tooth looks perfectly natural and without any issue while also being more durable than it was before.

Crowns

Crowns are usually installed over a tooth that is damaged or that needs protection. If veneers aren’t able to correct the issue, crowns are the next solution. They’re made of tooth-coloured material and are designed to protect the underlying tooth while also allowing it to function properly. You can get temporary or permanent. Temporary crowns would fit over your tooth like a cap.

Veneers

Veneers are another popular solution to correct cosmetic issues with people's teeth. You can get veneers made out of several materials; porcelain is one of the most common. Veneers are designed to go over the front of your teeth. They’re made of a thin layer of tooth-coloured material, like porcelain, and are attached to your teeth with strong glue.

Veneers are usually the solution to cover up or correct cracks in teeth, close small gaps, and treat discolouration. When the dentist puts in the veneers, they’ll remove a thin layer of your tooth enamel so that the veneer bonds well with the tooth.

Implants

Implants are a more invasive procedure. Many people have implants done when they lose a tooth or have to get a tooth pulled because of its condition. When you get an implant, a fake tooth made of a durable material is implanted in the place of the old tooth and is anchored directly to your jawbone to provide it with stability. Implants can last for a relatively long time, but this also depends on the quality of the procedure when it's done.

Inlays

Inlays are when a material is used to fill a gap or a hole in a tooth. Often, materials like silver, gold, or porcelain are used. While they’re aesthetically pleasing, they don’t offer many health benefits or support the tooth as other procedures do.

Onlays

Onlays are similar to inlays. However, they cover the outside of the tooth, the biting surface. That said, they have the same purpose as inlays.

How expensive are cosmetic dentist treatments?

The costs for cosmetic procedures will vary greatly depending on what treatment you go for and the extent of the treatment. For example, if you’re getting your teeth whitened, it’ll be a lot cheaper than having the four main teeth at the bottom and top of your mouth lined with veneers. That said, you can expect your more invasive procedures to be more costly. There are payment plans to help you cover the cost, though. You canfind payment plans on cosmetic treatments here.

Final Thoughts

Your smile is often the first thing people see, so it's no wonder people spend so much on it. Whether you’ve got discoloured teeth from drinking too much coffee or you were in an accident and your teeth chipped, getting dental cosmetic treatment is your one-way-stop to having your old smile back, and yes, it is worth it.
