Today's makeup is more art than just makeup – where the face is the canvas and foundation, contour and eyeshadow are the paint. One of the most colourful and most exciting bits of this art on the face is the eyeshadow! Eyeshadow is usually colourful, expressive and insanely artistic, and you can learn to do all the amazing stuff you get to see your favourite beauty gurus do with just a few tips and tricks. So whip out your eyeshadow pallete, some brushes, and let's get to painting.

The Power of Eyeshadow Bases

Before explaining the techniques, a little word about eyeshadow bases: a good base acts like a bond between skin and eyeshadow to make it last longer. These bases come in different forms: creamy, liquid, or powdered; each has its merits.

A good eyeshadow base amplifies not just the colour but extends your eyeshadow by preventing creasing and fading. Just imagine that really deep blue eyeshadow on your skin tone, looking poppin', even after an entire day and night without smudging or touch-ups; that's what an effective base does.

Layering for Depth

Layering is one of the coolest ways you can add some serious depth and dimension to your eyeshadow look. Just take a simple base shade to set the stage, then build up your colours in steps. Take a light wash of colour over the eyelids, and with some darker shades in the crease, make that colour bigger.

It will, in turn, enable you to control the intensity of the look that comes across. You may play with several hues, blending them with ease for a multidimensional effect. When using those cool yet scary and darker colours, ensure you blend well to avoid harsh lines.

Cut Crease for Precision

The cut crease is where you can add the maximum amount of drama into your makeup. In plain English, a cut crease is defining your eyelid's crease with some contrasting shade to make your eyes big.

Place the eyeshadow base on the eyelid. With the help of a small brush, cut the crease with some darker colour. Now, go ahead and place lighter shades of colour on the lid, thus giving a sharp contrast from that of the crease. It is really striking, bold, and apt for special occasions.

Ombre Effects for a Gradient Finish

Well, this ombre effect has taken the whole beauty world by storm, and it's pretty obvious why. So, in this technique, you'll have to blend several colours for that soft, gradient finish. First of all, choose two to three shades in the same colour family.

Go from lightest in the inner corner to progressively darker toward the outer corner. It works as a beautiful transition that gives your eyes this soft, ethereal glow. Employing eyeshadow bases of colours that match will really help to enhance this look by making them really blend seamlessly.

Metallics and Shimmers for Impact

For fans of anything sparkly, metallics and shimmers are on an entirely different plane. Those finishes catch in the light so nicely, they add that extra touch of glamour.

Apply the eyeshadow base; it really makes the metallic shades pop. Application can include a pop of shimmer onto the lid, blended in with a complementary matte in the crease for that contrast to catch attention, balancing out the look.

Graphic Liner for Bold Statements

Graphical eyeliner is one of those trends in fashion which has swept in the last couple of years. Sharp outlines and shapes around the eyes, along with eyeshadows, are ways through which this is done. This opens a whole arena of imagination and creativity to put as much or as little of it as you will.

Draw any shape desired with a small angled brush and highly pigmented eyeshadow-in matte, preferably. Then top it off with a good eyeshadow base, so it's really crisp and defined.

Final Touches

Once you are good with those creative ways, set your look off with a good setting spray; it helps to lock in the makeup and makes it last through the day or night.

Employing eyeshadow bases will really bring out great looks in your makeup. Application of the right techniques and right products will make your eyeshadow look beautiful while it lasts.

These various new eyeshadow techniques will add colour and drama to your makeup. The more you continue to practise, the more you will be able to do some really bold looks that show off your style.
